Object storage charges you by the gigabyte, and most of them charge again to pull your own data back out. A Kapsule storage server is a whole bare-metal box, so the per-terabyte price is a fraction of the big object stores and egress is always free.

Competitor figures are public list prices as at July 2026: Backblaze B2 at US$6 per TB per month (egress free up to three times your stored data each month, then US$0.01/GB); Wasabi at US$7.99 per TB per month (egress free within a fair-use cap tied to your stored volume, 1 TB minimum, 90-day minimum storage duration); and Amazon S3 Standard at about US$23 per TB per month (roughly US$0.023/GB) plus US$0.09/GB egress after the first 100 GB. Object storage is fully managed and redundant across machines; a Kapsule storage server is a single bare-metal box you operate, which is why the per-TB price is so much lower. Check current provider pricing before you rely on it.

Getting your data out is free
Most storage bills have a sting in the tail: egress. Backblaze B2 gives you three times your stored data free each month, then charges US$0.01 per GB. Amazon S3 charges US$0.09 per GB after the first 100 GB. On a Kapsule storage box there is no per-GB download fee at all. Restore a full backup, reseed a CDN, or migrate away, and Kapsule bills US$0 for the data moving out.

What a storage server is, and isn't
We would rather you buy the right thing than the cheapest line item. A storage server is exceptional value for raw capacity, but it is not a drop-in replacement for managed object storage. Here is the honest picture.

FAQ
Storage questions, answered
Zero egress fees, really?+
Yes. A storage server is your own box, so Kapsule never charges a per-gigabyte fee to move data on or off it. Restore backups, reseed a CDN or migrate away as often as you like for US$0. You pay for the server and your own upstream bandwidth, nothing per GB.
How is this so much cheaper than Backblaze, Wasabi or S3?+
Because it is a different product. Backblaze B2, Wasabi and Amazon S3 are fully managed, redundant object storage priced per gigabyte. A Kapsule storage server is a single bare-metal box you control, so you get raw capacity close to hardware cost: about US$1.80 per TB on the Shelf tier. The trade-off is that you run it, or take our managed tier and we run it for you.
Is it S3-compatible?+
Not out of the box: it is a Linux server, not an object store. You can install MinIO or Garage in minutes to get an S3-compatible endpoint, or use it as an SFTP, NFS or restic target. Our managed tier can set the storage layer up for you.
What about redundancy and durability?+
The disks sit in a hardware RAID array, so a single drive failure does not lose data. It is still one machine, though, so for true off-site durability pair it with a second box in another region and replicate, or use it as the backup copy alongside your primary. We are happy to design this with you.
How big can it get?+
The current line runs from Shelf at 64 TB up to Abyss at 308 TB usable per box, each with plenty of RAM for caching and an S3 or NFS layer. Need more? Run several and pool them.
Unmanaged or managed, which do I want?+
Unmanaged gives you the box and root, at the lowest price. Managed, at about 2.75 times the price, adds the OS and storage-layer setup, monitoring, off-box backups and our support team. Pick managed if you would rather not run a storage server yourself.
Where are the storage servers?+
Our storage line runs from our European data centres today. If you need a specific region for data-residency reasons, talk to us before you order.
What is the setup fee?+
Storage servers carry a one-time setup fee, shown as a separate line at checkout before you pay: it is a straight pass-through of the provisioning cost. Prices on this page are in USD; your local billing currency and any applicable tax are shown at checkout.
